THE QUESTION BANKS · 40 QUESTIONS

Questions couples never ask each other

For partners of any vintage — newlyweds to golden anniversaries.

Forty questions for the person you know best and have stopped asking about. Decades of shared life build shorthand, and shorthand skips the good parts. These go back for them.

USING THIS WELL

These aren't quiz questions and they aren't therapy — they're a long dinner's worth of curiosity. Take turns; answer everything you ask. 'What you never told me' and 'the hard years' need a good day and no audience, and either of you can pass on any question with no explanation owed. Record it if you both agree; some couples' answers become the family's most treasured recording.

Before we met

  1. What was your life like the year before we met? Who were you then?
  2. Who did you love before me — and what did they teach you that I've benefited from?
  3. What were you looking for back then — and were you actually looking?
  4. What almost kept us from ever meeting?
  5. What did your family predict about the kind of person you'd end up with?
  6. Is there a version of you I never got to meet that you sometimes miss?
  7. What were you afraid no one would ever love about you?

The early days

  1. What did you actually think of me the first time we met — the unedited version?
  2. When did you know? Was there a moment, or did it come in quietly?
  3. What did you tell your best friend about me?
  4. What nearly ended us early on that we never talk about?
  5. What did I do in that first year that you found charming then and would find insufferable now — or the other way around?
  6. What do you remember about the first place we lived that I've probably forgotten?
  7. What did you give up to choose us? Was it worth it?

What you never told me

  1. What's a compliment you've thought about me and never said out loud?
  2. What's something I do that stings a little every time — the thing you decided to live with?
  3. Is there a kindness I did once that mattered far more than I know?
  4. What have you protected me from over the years?
  5. What do you talk about with your friends that you don't bring home?
  6. What's a decision you made for both of us without ever telling me it was a decision?
  7. Is there a question you've been waiting for me to ask?

The hard years

  1. Which year was hardest on us — and what do you understand about it now that you didn't then?
  2. In the worst stretch, what made you stay?
  3. What did you need from me in the hard years that you never asked for out loud?
  4. What's a fight we kept having that was never really about the thing we fought about?
  5. When did you feel most alone inside this marriage — and what brought you back?
  6. What did we lose along the way that you'd want back?
  7. What did the hard years build in us that the easy ones never could have?

Us as parents & partners

  1. What's something I did as a parent that you admired and never mentioned?
  2. How did children change us — what did we gain, and what got set down and never picked back up?
  3. What do you hope the kids learned from watching us — and what do you hope they didn't?
  4. Where did you carry more than your share without me noticing?
  5. What did we get right that we never give ourselves credit for?
  6. If we could re-live one season of family life, which one — and what would you change?

Still curious

  1. What do you still wonder about me, after all this time?
  2. What do you keep hoping we'll do together that we keep not doing?
  3. What do I still get wrong about you, after all these years?
  4. How have I changed since we met — the changes you like, and the ones you've quietly grieved?
  5. What are you looking forward to that you haven't said out loud?
  6. If we met for the first time today, both of us exactly as we are — what do you think would happen?

When the answers start coming: record the voice, not just the words — and give the stories a permanent, private home, free.

If you are in crisis, or grief has you thinking about ending your life: call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, 24/7), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). You matter, and this feeling is survivable. More crisis and support lines.
