The transcript got the words wrong

Automatic transcription mangles names, places, and beloved accents. Edit the transcript — your correction wins and sticks.

Try this first

  1. Open the recording's transcript and edit it directly. You can fix a single word or rewrite whole passages.
  2. Save your changes. From then on, your version is the transcript — the machine won't overwrite it.
  3. Fix the names and places first if you're short on time. They're what family members search for, and what the machine gets wrong most.

What's going on

Every audio and video upload gets an automatic transcript so stories are searchable and readable. Automatic transcription is good at ordinary sentences and bad at exactly the things that matter most in a family archive: proper names, small towns, old-country words, and — yes — Grandma's accent. This is a known limit of the machine, not a flaw in the recording or in Grandma.

That's why the transcript is fully editable, and why the human's edit always wins. Once you've corrected it, your text is the text. It never gets quietly re-transcribed over your work.

OUR PROMISE

The original audio or video is never altered by transcription or by your edits. The voice itself stays exactly as recorded.

If that didn't work

If a transcript never appeared at all, or your edits won't save, write to [email protected] with a link to the recording and we'll take a look.
